Back Door Blog: 43rd St. Parking

by Lisa Bregman

Motorcycle owners living at the Towers as well as a few who don’t live here discovered that 43rd Street is private (not privately owned, just away from the madding crowd), and there are no meters or 2-hour time restrictions; vehicles without zone 3 stickers can — and do — remain parked there indefinitely.

At first, there were just a few bikes that came and went, that were parked near one another and that seemed to belong to Towers residents.  However, now they are a permanent fixture and have created a parking lot where there used to be three parking spaces convenient for people who had packages or children to bring in or who have difficulty walking a long distance from the car to their apartment.   At least a few of the bike owners do not live here, just leave their bikes here for extended periods of time.  They have spread themselves out in an apparent effort to prevent cars from using their private motorcycle parking lot — that just happens to be on a public street abutting the back door of a large condominium. ◊◊◊

Back Door Blog: Fox Sightings

by Lisa Bregman

Yes, a real live fox comes to visit!  (Aha, could there be a historical derivation for the names Foxhall Road and Foxhall Medical Building?) He walks around, on occasion, on the lawn bordered by 43rd Street and New Mexico Avenue.  And he has been seen on the driveway leading to the loading dock.  If you have seen him (or her, as the case may be?), let us know.  Rob and Joy, whose patio faces the walkway to the 6th floor entrance, have noticed the squirrels having quite a noisy conference when the fox is around.

Have you seen the fox?  What was s/he up to? ◊◊◊

Back Door Blogging: Kudos to the Cleaning Staff!

by Lisa Bregman
Kudos to the incredibly cheerful cleaning staff who spend over an hour every day of the week to not only clear away the salt and slush and slime, but to go the extra mile and a half to get the back “lobby” to sparkle and shine!  As we go in and out of the building, blasting cold air on them as they toil away, each one smiles, turns off the vacuum so as not to offend us, and then continues her work as we go on our merry way.  We are so lucky to have such a good staff here. ◊◊◊

Back Door Blogging

by Lisa Bregman
Many Towers residents come and go through the back door on the 6th floor of the West building.  We find it convenient to park near that entrance; or we exit through the 6th floor doors to begin our walk to nearby destinations such as American University, Starbucks, Rite-Aid, or the Foxhall Medical Building.  In fact, there is a sort of community of Towers folks who have come to recognize each other as we pass through the 6th floor doors.  Stay tuned for some observations about our neighborhood within the Towers neighborhood.

Towers Movie House: Blizzard Edition

Empire Falls

Escape the snow with another movie. Tonight’s impromptu presentation is Empire Falls. In a tiny Maine town, modest restaurant manger Miles Roby (Ed Harris) goes through the motions as he tries to keep his Empire Grill restaurant afloat while dealing with an abrasive boss (Joann Woodward), a wife (Helen Hunt) who ran out on him, a nosy father (Paul Newman) and a teenage daughter (Danielle Panabaker). This critically acclaimed HBO miniseries is based on Richard Russo’s Pulitizer prize-winning novel of the same name.

Tonight, 7:30pm, East Building Activities Room.

Heroes of the Storm

Mari of Towers Housekeeping

by Matthew Kelly

Many Towers staff have worked above and beyond the call of duty during the Blizzard of 2010. One of them is Mari, part of the wonderful housekeeping crew who keep the Towers neat and tidy.

Unable to get home because of the storm, Mari has been at the Towers since Friday, camping out in the housekeeping offices at night, and visiting the Towers’ grocery for meals. Despite these circumstances, Mari maintains a welcome smile as she continues her duties each day, hoping for the opportunity to get home.

Grateful for her service and sympathetic to her plight, one Towers resident brought Mari homemade chicken soup.

The blizzard has stranded other Towers’ staff members, too. Karen and Sam stayed overnight Tuesday. Tina camped out for the weekend (relieved for a while by our own Roberta!).

And then there’s the maintenance crew. Since Friday they have done a tremendous job keeping the sidewalks, pathways, and driveways free and clear of snow. They are the biggest heroes of the blizzard of 2010.

Next time you see a staff member, remember what they’ve been through for us. Give them a smile and a warm word and, if you can, maybe a bowl of chicken soup. ◊◊◊
